Today’s consumers expect more than a product on a shelf. They expect transparency, relevance, and connection. At the same time, brands are under growing pressure to reduce waste, improve efficiency, and meet increasingly ambitious sustainability goals. Smart and connected packaging is emerging at the intersection of these demands, transforming how companies engage consumers while delivering measurable operational and environmental benefits.

Connected packaging combines cloud-enabled technologies with product identification to turn packaging into an active, data-rich touchpoint. By integrating dynamic QR codes, real-time label data, and traceability, organizations can create better consumer experiences while gaining the visibility and control needed to operate more sustainably.

Turning packaging into a two-way conversation

Dynamic QR codes are changing what packaging can do. Unlike static labels, they can be updated in real-time and tailored based on location, language, device type, or even time of day. A consumer scanning a product in one market might see localized usage instructions, while another sees region-specific promotions, sustainability information, or loyalty content.

This flexibility allows brands to engage consumers at the point of interaction without redesigning or reprinting packaging. The result is a more relevant and personalized experience that builds trust and strengthens brand loyalty.
The appetite for this kind of interaction is clear. In our 2026 Top 5 Trends report, 44% of respondents identified improved consumer engagement as a primary benefit of connected packaging, while 64% cited enhanced traceability.

Reducing waste through real-time label data

Beyond engagement, connected packaging delivers tangible operational gains. Traditional labeling processes are often rigid and error prone. Regulatory updates, ingredient changes, or minor corrections can trigger costly reprints, excess inventory, and unnecessary waste.

Real-time label data changes that. Companies can update content instantly across the supply chain, correcting errors, reflecting regulatory changes, or adjusting information without scrapping existing packaging. This reduces material waste, lowers costs, and improves speed and accuracy.

The impact is significant. 91% of companies surveyed believe real-time label data helps reduce waste, errors, or improve operational efficiency. These capabilities directly support sustainability goals by minimizing resource use while also protecting brands from mislabeling, recalls, and compliance risks.

Smart packaging also supports circular economy initiatives by enabling reuse, reducing overproduction, and helping organizations design packaging processes that are more adaptable and less wasteful over time.

Traceability that drives insight and trust

Traceability is another cornerstone of connected packaging. Technologies like GS1 Digital Link - part of GS1’s global Sunrise 2027 initiative - connect physical products to digital information through a single, scannable code. By 2027, retailers and brands will need to be capable of scanning 2D barcodes at the point of sale, making this shift not just strategic but inevitable.

With Digital Link-enabled labeling, products can be tracked from production through distribution to the shelf. This visibility supports better inventory management, faster recall response, improved demand planning, and deeper insight into product movement and usage patterns.

Traceability also plays a critical role in consumer trust. When brands can clearly demonstrate where products come from, how they’re made, and how sustainability commitments are being met, transparency becomes a differentiator rather than just a compliance checkbox.

Smart packaging as a business advantage

Smart and connected packaging isn’t about introducing complexity; it’s about adding intelligence. By combining engagement, efficiency, and traceability, organizations can meet consumer expectations while improving sustainability and operational performance.

As pressure mounts from consumers, regulators, and internal stakeholders alike, packaging is becoming one of the most powerful levers brands have to deliver value across the business. Those who invest in connected packaging today will be better positioned to engage tomorrow’s consumers, reduce waste, and operate with confidence in an increasingly data-driven world.
